I am a physiology educator with a passion for Team-Based Learning.

I became fascinated with physiology while attending High School, and was lucky enough to study Physiological Sciences at Balliol College, Oxford University. There I studied a wide range of physiological systems from the molecular to behavioural level.

I did a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Pharmacology) under Dr. Michael Curtis at the Rayne Institute in St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. I studied Mike’s papers during my undergraduate studies in Oxford and became interested in the mechanisms of arrhythmias during myocardial ischemia. I contacted Mike and was able to work in his lab for 4 years.

I did postdoctoral studies with Dr. Mike Curtis and Prof. Metin Avkiran at St. Thomas’ Hospital, before I moved to the USA in 2005 for another postdoc in the lab of Dr. Don Bers at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL.

I moved to Lewisburg, West Virginia in 2007 to become an assistant professor at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. I was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. During my time at WVSOM I continued developing my passion for physiology and was also introduced to Team-Based Learning.

In 2016 I moved to the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Rockford, IL, where I am now Clinical Associate Professor.

I have two boys.

What I do

Team-Based Learning

I am a consultant-trainer in Team-Based Learning, certified through the Team-Based Learning Collaborative. Team-Based Learning is an extremely effective method for deep learning. Soccer coaching

I am a soccer coach, currently coaching 14U boys in the ECNL for Rockford Raptors FC in Rockford, Illinois. I have coached all ages from 4 year olds to High Schoolers! I have a USSF C license, a National Youth License, and NSCAA Goalkeeping Diplomas. I love being an educator on the field and in the classroom!

Physiology

I began to gain an interest in Physiology in High School through my Biology lessons. It was the only part of Biology that I really loved! I became fascinated with how the human body works more and more as I studied human physiology at Oxford. Now I am lucky to be able to spread that passion to medical students- to help them with applying physiological concepts to diagnosis and treatment of disease.
